Colossians 3:10
“And have clothed yourselves with the new [spiritual self], which is [ever in the process of being] renewed and remolded into [fuller and more perfect knowledge upon] knowledge after the image (the likeness) of Him Who created it.”
Paul talks about clothing ourselves with our “new spiritual self”.
He was writing to the people of the day because they were new Christians.
Everybody was a new Christian back then because Christ was new.
He had come to replace the Law which they had lived by for thousands of years.
They had to learn a new way of thinking and believing.
And new ways of believing require intentionality.
Paul gives them a simple analogy.
Just like people put on clothes every day, Paul says put on our new spirit.
He says this spirit is constantly being made new as we learn.
As we grow in our experience with the Lord, He changes us.
He changes our hearts.
And as He changes our hearts, we change.
Our behavior changes.
We become more like Him.
We become more lovely when we live out of His purpose of love.
Paul also says our hearts are molded and shaped.
He says we gain “knowledge upon knowledge”.
I started thinking about how I learn new things.
At first, I have no perspective, no idea, no real clear understanding of the task.
Things don’t really make sense.
But I trust in the process.
I usually make a lot of mistakes which is how I learn.
I learn by making mistakes.
I learn what not to do.
Sometimes I have to learn a particular lesson more than once.
I have found that the most outstanding trainers in my life give me grace.
They gently correct me and show me why I made the mistake and how not to do that again.
I imagine this is the way the Lord teaches us as well.
We may think we make a huge mistake in God’s kingdom, and yet He understands us.
He gives us grace and gently shows us the correct way.
He loves us through all our mistakes.
And through the process we learn.
Enfolded in His love, we learn what to do and what not to do.
We must give ourselves grace as well.
As we learn we will make mistakes.
It is simply part of the process.
Today I choose to be willing to learn God’s ways and give myself grace when I miss the mark.
May you find that God is gracious and loving as He teaches you more of Him and His ways.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for reminding me that You are my Teacher. Thank You for showing me more about You and Your ways every day. Help me learn of You, Father. Open up my heart so I can learn more of You. Thank You for enfolding me in Your love as You mold and shape my heart. Thank You for giving me grace when I miss the mark. Help me do all You ask of me. Help me give up my will for Yours. May Your Holy Spirit fill me with Your Wisdom, so I can become more like You. You are great, Oh Lord. You are great and mighty and are greatly to be praised. You are the God of this universe and God of my heart. You are all I need and all I desire. Keep my eyes on You. Keep me Yours, Lord. Keep me Yours for all eternity. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I enjoy teaching you about Me, My child, and will continue to teach you My ways.
Response: Thank You, most gracious and loving Father.
