Romans 12:5
“So we, numerous as we are, are one body in Christ (the Messiah) and individually we are parts one of another [mutually dependent on one another].”
“Mutually dependent on one another.”
A phrase I need to work on, maybe you as well.
If it were up to me, I’d do it myself just like a toddler does.
But then we know toddlers don’t have the ability to do all the things they think they can.
We give them space to try, but when they cannot tie their shoe properly, we bend down to help.
Just so, we need to allow our fellow believers the space to try.
And when they look our way for help, we offer help graciously.
In the same way, we must accept help from others.
That’s the hard piece for me.
Allowing others to help.
Our passage tells us that we need to be mutually dependent on one another which means none of us is given all the gifts the rest of the passage talks about.
Someone is given the gift of prophecy.
Someone else the gift of service.
Another the gift of teaching, or exhortation, or financial giving, or superintending, or mercy, or hospitality.
None of us has all these gifts.
So, we must rely on one another for what we lack.
Paul also writes, “Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits.”
Sometimes when things come easy to us, we can’t imagine why they aren’t easy for others.
This may be what Paul is cautioning against here.
We can be grateful for the gifts we’ve been given, but at the same time not judge others for not having those same gifts.
What comes easily to us, won’t come easily to someone else which is all according to God’s plan.
So, let us rejoice in one another’s gifts, give grace where our gifts are different, and bend to help someone who needs ours.
Today I choose to be thankful for the gifts God has given me and allow others to help me where I need help.
May you find your gifts are beautiful to the Lord Who gave them to you and others who He asks you to serve.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, thank You for the gifts You’ve given each of us. Thank You for our differences and similarities. Thank You for designing us to be mutually dependent on one another. May we celebrate one another knowing You have bestowed us each with special abilities to help one another. May Your Spirit prompt us to help the one in need that You ask us to help. And may we accept the help others offer us. Help each of us serve as You designed us to serve for Your glory. Keep us from pride and haughtiness. Keep us at Your feet seeking Your will and Your desire for our service. Help us bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing our prayer.
Answer: I have bestowed gifts on each of you to be used for My glory and the good of all.
Response: Help us serve You for Your glory, Lord, God Almighty. In Jesus’ name, amen.
