John 4:8-10
“Again, the devil took Him up on a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory (the splendor, magnificence, preeminence, and excellence) of them.”
“And He said to Him, These things, all taken together, I will give You if You will prostrate Yourself before me and do homage and worship me.”
“Then Jesus said to him, Begone, Satan! For it has been written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.”
I was convicted as I read this passage today.
The enemy showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world.
He showed Him their magnificence, splendor, excellence, and superiority.
It must have been an amazing sight.
Interestingly, Jesus wasn’t shown the poverty, pain, and anguish in those kingdoms.
He was shown only the beautiful and perfect parts.
Just one kingdom would have ignited an awe-inspiring moment for me.
I would have been taken aback, mesmerized, and possibly persuaded by its magnificence.
But not Jesus.
He was not impressed even with all the kingdoms in front of Him.
He was not allured by the enemy at all.
In fact, He yelled, “Begone, Satan!”
Jesus used an exclamation point here.
There was no question about His intention.
And then He quoted scripture, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.”
In fact, all of His responses to Satan’s temptations were direct quotations from the book of Deuteronomy.
Jesus showed us exactly how to defend ourselves from the enemy.
Even the enemy knows scripture and he cannot argue against it.
The new insight I gained here is that the enemy doesn’t come out and ask us to worship him without dangling a prize in front of us.
In Jesus’ case, it was the beauty and magnificence of all the kingdoms on the earth.
For us, far less may be required to direct our attention away from God.
I need to be more diligent here.
I need to not let my attention get directed away from the Lord for any reason.
I pray the Lord imparts His wisdom to my soul, so I recognize the tempter in all his different forms.
Today I choose to stand for the Lord and against the enemy.
May you find the Lord imparts His strength to withstand the enemy’s advances.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for showing me I need to guard my heart. Thank You for showing me You are all I need. Thank You for showing me that worshiping You is the only worship I should allow my heart to engage in. Please impart Your wisdom into my soul. Help me discern the difference between Your gifts and the enemy’s temptations. Help me follow You wholly and completely. Do not let me be persuaded to follow the world’s ways. Keep my eyes on You, Lord. Keep my mind on You. Keep my heart seeking You. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I AM your God and King, and you shall follow none other than Me.
Response: Keep me following You, Almighty God and King.
