Luke 4:13
“And when the devil had ended every [the complete cycle of] temptation, he [temporarily] left Him [that is, stood off from Him] until another more opportune and favorable time.”
As we know, Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness.
He was tempted by the enemy during this forty-day fast.
Isn’t that the way the enemy works?
He tempts us when we are the weakest.
Jesus fought the enemy with scripture.
He spoke out of the book of Deuteronomy each time.
In doing so, Jesus shows us quoting scripture into the enemy’s attempts is an effective way to fight.
In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus said, “Keep awake and watch and pray [constantly], that you may not enter into temptation.”
Prayer is a tool we can use to stay out of temptation.
I was certainly convicted as I read about Jesus’ temptation because I started thinking about how I typically deal with temptation.
Sometimes I get in such a tizzy I forget all about praying and can’t remember scripture to save my life.
I lose my peace which is exactly the enemy’s intent.
He also intends to steal joy, contentment, and focus.
Not only this, but He continues to concoct new ways to bother us.
Our passage says the enemy temporarily left Jesus after this particular cycle of temptations was over.
So, there are cycles of temptations.
And it’s not a one and done effort to tempt us either.
They just keep coming.
So, I am prompted to memorize more scripture and add prayer against temptation to my daily regimen.
Today I choose to lean into God, memorize more of His Word, and pray against temptation while I stay expectant the Lord will strengthen me and keep me safe from the enemy.
May you find the Lord is strengthening you and keeping watch over you so you can withstand the advances from the enemy.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for teaching me more about withstanding the advances of the enemy. Help me lean into You and Your Word, so I can be more prepared to do battle. Help me be diligent in memorizing scripture to use against the enemy when he attacks. Lord, I pray You strengthen me in all ways to stand against his advances. Infuse courage into my spirit so I am able to fight as You equipped King David to fight against his adversaries. Remove any fear and doubt from my mind and replace those things with confidence and power. Help me fully walk into Your will for my life. Do not let discouragement or disappointment have any power over me, Lord. Keep my eyes on You, Almighty God. Help me be one with You and act in Your power. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I AM the Great I AM, and I equip you in all ways to stand strong against the enemy and walk into My plan.
Response: Thank You, Almighty God and most gracious Father.
