True Humility

Philippians 2:3 and 5
Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, or selfishness] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves].
Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus; [Let Him be your example in humility;]
Paul tells us to regard others more highly than ourselves.
He tells us to put on humility.
We may know what humility is, but do we know what humility looks like?
It looks like a King hanging on a cross for each one of us.
It looks like leaving paradise to save mankind.
It looks like putting others above ourselves.
Jesus was not born into royalty.
He was royalty.
And even though He is the real Royal, He came to serve.
Paul encourages us to use Jesus as our example of humility.
Later in the chapter Paul says, “Do all things without grumbling and faultfinding and complaining [against God] and questioning and doubting [among yourselves].”
This pairs well with our passage today when we think about one another.
The Lord made each of us for His purpose.
He crafted each one of our hearts.
And if we complain about someone He made, then we are complaining about God’s handiwork.
Perspective.
I needed a perspective shift today.
How about you?
Today I choose to pray against the spirit of complaining and faultfinding and put on a humble spirit as I try to be more like Christ and serve others.
May you find that as you follow Christ’s example you are able to put on a humble spirit and love others as God asks us to do.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, thank You for Your Word that teaches us humility. Thank You for Jesus’ example of pure service and humility. Help us lift others up, Lord. Help us all honor Your people. You made each of us exactly as You planned. You’ve crafted every heart, formed every spirit, and constructed every brain. We are all here because of Your handiwork. Help us find the good in every person. Help us find You in their spirit. May we love as You love, Father, and serve You with joy. Help us bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing our prayer.
Answer: My Spirit is gentle and loving and is in your heart. Be gentle and love others.
Response: Help us love as You love, most gracious and caring Father. In Jesus’ name, amen.
