Luke 21:1-3
“Looking up, [Jesus] saw the rich people putting their gifts into the treasury.”
“And He saw also a poor widow putting in two mites (copper coins),”
“And He said, Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them;”
Opposite day is a national holiday celebrated on January 25th every year.
The origin of this day is unknown but believed to have been started in the nineteenth century.
Maybe the person who started this holiday understood more of God’s ways than me.
So many of His ways are opposite of man’s ways.
Jesus gives us a glimpse of this in our passage today.
A widow gave a couple coins as her tithe.
The rich gave much more in terms of monetary value.
But to Jesus, she gave more.
She gave one hundred percent of what she had while the rich gave a small portion.
The widow held nothing back.
She gave it all.
And God counted it as abundant giving.
He wasn’t concerned with the monetary amount.
He saw something deeper.
The widow gave without reservation while the rich held back.
As I read the few short words in our passage today, I became grateful.
Grateful the Lord requires nothing more than what I have to give.
Grateful He doesn’t compare me to anyone else.
He sees what I have.
He sees how much I give.
And He sees my sacrifice.
He doesn’t expect me to give more than I am able.
He doesn’t feel cheated when I give what I have.
In fact, He counts my gifts as abundantly given.
We need to remember we are enough for God.
Today I choose to give all I have to the Lord and know He deeply appreciates what I offer.
May you find the Lord sees you and the gifts you give as perfectly abundant.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for seeing me for who I am. Thank You for seeing the sacrifices I make to do what You ask me to do. May the gifts I lay at Your feet be enough. May the service I give You be sufficient. Thank You for not comparing me to any others who may be able to give You more. May You bless the gifts I bring to You, Lord. Help me continue to serve You and give all I am able until my time here is done. Keep my eyes on You instead of the world. Keep my eyes on You instead of someone who is doing more and giving more than me. Help me know I am enough in Your eyes, Lord. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I see you, My child, and I know the sacrifices you make to do as I ask. My grace and blessings are upon you.
Response: Help me serve You with all I have and all You have given me, Lord.
