Colossians 4:2
“Be earnest and unwearied and steadfast in your prayer [life], being [both] alert and intent in [your praying] with thanksgiving.”
Great words of wisdom from Paul in this passage.
Almost every word is an action word as he talks about prayer.
He tells us to be earnest as we pray which means we are to be eager to pray.
Prayer is our lifeline to the Lord, so I see the need to be enthusiastic about every opportunity we can take to pray.
He also tells us to not become weary of praying.
There are times we pray for the same things over and over again without the desired results.
But in Matthew 7:7 Jesus tells us to “Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you.”
So, Paul’s advice that we not tire of praying is a nugget of Wisdom we should remember as we approach prayer fatigue.
Paul also tells us to be steadfast which means to remain firm and constant in our prayers.
We are to remain of one mind and be consistent about our requests we make known to God.
He also tells us to be alert.
It is interesting to me that all the ways Paul tells us to pray require action.
Prayer is an action.
And we are expecting the Lord to be in action as a result of our prayer.
Lastly, Paul said to pray with thanksgiving.
As I think about my own children asking for things, I am always more apt to get into action when they are asking with a grateful and thankful heart.
Not that the Lord is as impressionable as I am in this area.
But I still find thanksgiving quiets my frustrated heart and puts me in a place of peace.
The Lord hears our prayers.
And Paul gives us such sound wisdom here in this very short passage about how to effectively bring our prayers to the Lord.
Today I choose to pray with intention, attention, and with thanksgiving as I make my requests known to God.
May you find that as you infuse action into your prayer life the Lord’s Spirit will come alive in your spirit.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for reminding me to pray in earnest and not become weary in coming to You for what I need and desire. Thank You for reminding me that I may come to You with my petitions and requests with boldness. And thank You for reminding me to come to You with a thankful heart. May my prayers be acceptable to You. May they be as sweet perfume to You. May Your will be done, always. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I hear your prayers My child and will answer you and bless you and your household.
Response: Thank You, most gracious Lord.
