Luke 19:37-38
As He was approaching [the city], at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to rejoice and to praise God [extolling Him exultantly and] loudly for all the mighty miracles and works of power that they had witnessed, Crying, Blessed (celebrated with praises) is the King Who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven [freedom there from all the distresses that are experienced as the result of sin] and glory (majesty and splendor) in the highest [heaven]!
This was the first Palm Sunday.
The people praised Jesus in the streets for all the miracles He had done, not the least of which was the gift of peace.
The meaning of peace in our passage is the “freedom there from all the distresses that are experienced as the result of sin.”
We certainly look forward to the day when our sins no longer have a hold on us.
We look forward to the day we’ll experience perfect peace in heaven.
But it is possible to experience peace here on earth as well.
Jesus is our Prince of Peace, and it is our privilege to receive this gift He came to offer.
The word peace is mentioned 429 times in the King James version according to a reference I found.
And in John 14:27 Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.]”
To bequeath is to pass down or will to someone after death.
Jesus willed His peace to us.
Let us receive the peace Jesus meant for us to have especially as we prepare to celebrate His birth this week!
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, thank You for sending Your Son to this world to offer us peace. Father, may we sit with You for a few precious moments and allow You to wrap us in a blanket of peace. Settle our worried minds and keep our focus on You. Help us give you all our burdens and anxious thoughts and set them at Your feet. Help us trust You to work out the details in our lives. May we be present in the lives of those around us today. May Your joy and love fill our hearts as we move through the day. Help us bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing our prayer.
Answer: I sent My Son so you may have peace. Rest in Me today.
Response: Help us receive Your peace, most gracious and merciful Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
