Matthew 18:4
“Whoever will humble himself therefore and become like this little child [trusting, lowly, loving, forgiving] is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
This passage is an answer to a question.
The disciples wanted to know who would be considered the greatest in heaven.
It seems like more of a kind of king of the hill type query.
Who’s best?
Who’s greatest?
Maybe the question was birthed out of really wanting to know what they could do to honor the Lord.
We don’t really know.
And I’m not sure I’ve ever really understood the answer.
Jesus said, children were considered the greatest in heaven, which seems a little backwards.
But so many of God’s ways seem opposite to the way we think.
Going back to Jesus’ answer, He said, “become like this little child.”
It wasn’t that children were the greatest, but that we were to become more like them.
Children are trusting.
They trust everything they are told.
Jesus was saying, trust in Lord as little children trust.
They are lowly.
Most children do not think of themselves as greater than other human beings.
They are humble in nature and don’t desire to lord over others.
Jesus was saying, don’t think of yourselves as better than your neighbor.
Children are loving.
They wake up in the morning with a sweet and curious nature.
They look at every new day as an adventure.
And they look at us with love in their eyes.
Jesus was saying, love like a little child.
They are also quick to forgive.
They don’t harbor a grudge.
They will forgive us just because we ask them to.
Jesus was saying, forgive others quickly and without reserve.
These are the desirable qualities Jesus referred to in our passage today.
The qualities which are seen as greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Today I choose to don the qualities of love, trust, forgiveness, and a humble nature.
May you find as you trust, love, forgive, and are humble that you are already great in the kingdom of God.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for showing me more about what You desire. Thank You for showing me I need to become more like a child who is innocent, trusting, loving, and quick to forgive. Thank You for showing me You desire a humble spirit. Help me be more like You. Help me be more like Your Son. And help me be more like a child in all their innocence. Break off the bitterness and hard nature I have constructed, Father. Help me loosen the chains of this world and be more loving toward others. Help me be more compassionate to those around me. Help me desire to serve rather than be served. Help me desire to care more than be cared for. Help me offer grace instead of judgment and wrath. Fill me with Your love, Father. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I AM love, My child, and I desire you love others as I have loved you.
Response: Help me be more like You, most gracious and merciful Lord.
