John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.]”
Jesus was giving His peace to the disciples.
And not just giving His peace, He was bequeathing His peace to them.
To bequeath something is to prearrange for something to be given to someone upon one’s death.
So, Jesus was actually willing His peace to the disciples.
This is amazing to think about and the fact that we are recipients of it is amazing as well.
However, we have to accept it in order for it to be ours.
An inheritance must be accepted before it can be received, used, and then appreciated.
So, the question is, will we accept this inheritance?
Jesus told them a couple more things which I believe are essential to receiving His peace.
He told them to not to LET their hearts be troubled.
The word LET leads me to think there is a choice.
We can either LET our hearts be troubled or not.
He also told them to not LET themselves be afraid.
Another choice.
Actually, there are three choices here:
1. Accept the peace Jesus offers.
2. Keep our hearts from being troubled.
3. Keep ourselves from being afraid.
I am not able to choose well left to my own devices, so I pray the Lord will help me fully receive His peace.
I also pray He shows me when I am being drawn into the temptation to take on the world’s distresses and troubles which lead me away from His peace.
Today I choose peace and courage over distress and fear.
May you find the Lord is offering you His peace today and every day and He will keep you from being unsettled and fearful.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for reminding me to accept the peace Jesus came to offer. Help my heart stay quiet, Father. I seek peace over distress today. There are troubles that take my mind and spirit to frustration and calamity, but You O God are not in those things. You are always found in peace. Help me stay connected to You instead of connected to this world. Keep my mind on You. You are the God of the universe and God of my heart. You are FOR me while the world and all its troubles are against me. Help me push those things away and keep my eyes on Your glory and all Your wonder. You are beautiful, Lord. You have made all beautiful things. Help me see those things and keep them close to my heart. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I AM with you My child and will keep my arms around you and surround you in peace.
Response. Thank You, most merciful and gracious Father.
