Psalm 94:12-13
“Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man whom You discipline and instruct, O Lord, and teach out of Your law,”
“That You may give him power to keep himself calm in the days of adversity, until the [inevitable] pit of corruption is dug for the wicked.”
As I read our verses today, I cringed a little because I don’t necessarily enjoy discipline.
However, the psalmist tells us we are blessed when God disciplines and instructs us.
In actuality, I don’t feel like I’ve ever been disciplined by God in the way we think of discipline.
I usually consider discipline as harsh, hard, or militaristic.
But God isn’t any of those things.
He is love.
And He teaches in the most loving way.
When I fall short or falter, the Lord is there to pick me up not put me down.
I started thinking about my children and when they made mistakes.
They would come to me feeling so badly.
It usually was necessary to add to their pain through harsh discipline.
Of course, we talked about the situation and learned the lesson it taught, but I didn’t add to their distress with harsh or unkind words.
They likely had to suffer the consequences of their behavior.
And they had to correct their errors.
But I didn’t hold it over them.
I let the lesson do the teaching.
God is even more loving than I am, and He knows exactly what needs to happen in order to teach me what I need to learn.
He allows me space to fail, space to learn, and continues to love me through the process.
He enfolds me in His love as He teaches me the errors of my ways.
I have to be open to learning though or I won’t receive His teaching and learn.
However, when I am, I receive a special gift.
Our second verse tells us the Lord gives us His power to keep ourselves calm in the days of adversity.
This is a promise to hold onto.
Today I choose to receive the Lord’s instruction and teaching, so I can learn more of Him and receive His power on troubled days.
May you find the Lord will compass you about in His mercy as He teaches you more about Him, so you will be strong when adversity comes.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for reminding me You are a God of mercy and love. Thank You for teaching me and compassing me about in love. Thank You for always forgiving my short comings and failures. Thank You for allowing me space to miss the mark as You show me a better way. Help me be open and willing to learn, Lord. Show me more of You and more of how I need to be more like You. Open up my heart to receive Your knowledge and wisdom. I pray You give me an extra measure of wisdom. And help me be obedient to You in all ways. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I enjoy teaching you My child and will continue to pour My wisdom into you.
Response: Help me learn all You have to teach me, Father.
