Matthew 5:44-45
“But I tell you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”
“To show that you are the children of your Father Who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the wicked and on the good, and makes the rain fall upon the upright and the wrongdoers [alike].”
Jesus shared so much wisdom in the whole fifth chapter of Matthew.
There is nugget after nugget of truth which gives us a glimpse into the heart of God.
In our verse today, Jesus tells us to love our enemies.
He tells us to pray for those who persecute us.
I’m pretty sure He is not asking us to pray against them.
He is asking us to pray for them.
This seem so counter-intuitive because I am more likely to hope karma will give my enemies their just reward.
And what’s worse is I feel justified in thinking they will get what’s coming to them.
However, Jesus tells us differently.
He tells us to pray good things for them.
He ends the discussion on this topic in verse forty-eight saying, “You, therefore, must be perfect [growing into complete maturity of godliness in mind and character, having reached the proper height of virtue and integrity], as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
Well, I am far from perfect, but I can strive to mature.
I love the Amplified Bible’s further explanation of Jesus’ words: “growing into complete maturity of godliness in mind and character.”
It is hard to wrap my head around the power of praying for my enemies but as I carry out Jesus’ teaching here, my mind and spirit change.
My mind may not agree at first, but the more I practice what He teaches my mind follows.
When I forgive those who hurt me and pray for them, I am blessed and I grow one step closer into the maturity Jesus talked about.
The blessing of a peaceful spirit is worth the work.
Today I choose to pray for those who have hurt me, forgive them, and receive the peace Jesus came to this earth to give me.
May you find great peace and spiritual blessing in praying for those who have hurt you.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for showing me more of Your ways. Thank You for sending Your Son to teach me how to grow in godliness and spiritual maturity. Help me love my enemies and pray for those who have hurt me, Lord. Help me forgive them because as I forgive, I receive Your peace. I desire Your peace more than I desire the wrongdoers suffering. Help me grow to full spiritual maturity, Father. Infuse my soul with Your Wisdom. Help me become more like You every day. Don’t let this earth steal my joy. May Your joy be ever in my heart. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I AM with you My child and will continue to teach you My ways and help you grow.
Response: Help me be learn of You, Lord and be obedient to You.
