Luke 10:40-42
“But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing in You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]!”
“But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things;”
“There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.”
In Jesus’ eyes Mary, who sat at Jesus’ feet, chose the good portion.
She chose to sit still and listen.
Sit still and learn.
Sit still and worship.
Martha, however, busied herself with serving.
And in some ways, it is confusing that Jesus told her she was in error, because Jesus told His disciples their mission was to serve.
The rest of their lives would be in service to God.
In our passage, Martha thought she was doing the right thing in serving.
However, our text further defines her service as being “overly occupied and too busy”.
Balance.
We all need balance even when we serve others.
Maybe especially when we are serving others.
We can become more concerned with other’s needs than our own.
I struggle greatly in this area as I relate more to Martha today.
I need to do better here.
Jesus told her Martha she was anxious and troubled about many things.
Anxiety is a fierce captor.
There is never enough of our good intention and work to calm this beast.
My mind rolls around everything I haven’t done and all the ways I’ve come up short.
Jesus told Martha there is very little that we actually need and very little to worry about.
He told her that Mary had chosen the best part of life as she sat at His feet and marveled at His words.
So, I find myself asking God to lead me to the place Mary took.
Lead me to His feet.
Lead me to a quiet heart and a desire to learn more of Him.
Today I choose to sit in the presence of the Lord for a few precious moments and learn of Him.
May you find the Lord is waiting to feed your heart and mind with Himself and grant you peace.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for showing me You desire a quiet heart that seeks You. Thank You for showing me that doing more work doesn’t elevate my stature with You. Father, help me choose You first. Help me choose to sit with You and learn of You before and ahead of anything else. Quiet my restless heart and help me find peace. You are the God of this universe and God of my heart. I love You, Lord. Help me worship You, Father. Lead and guide me today. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: You are My treasure My child, and I desire to spend time with you.
Response: Help me put You first, Lord and sit in your presence this day.
