Shameless Persistence

Luke 11:8-11
“I tell you, although he will not get up and supply him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his shameless persistence and insistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.”
“So I say to you, Ask and keep on asking and it shall be given you; seek and keep on seeking and you shall find; knock and keep on knocking and the door shall be opened to you.”
“For everyone who asks and keeps on asking receives; and he who seeks and keeps on seeking finds; and to him who knocks and keeps on knocking, the door shall be opened.”
Jesus had just taught the disciples how to pray.
He had given them what we now lovingly refer to as the Lord’s prayer.
As soon as He gave them this prayer, He told them the story about the man who needed bread from his friend in the middle of the night.
Of course, no one wants to be disturbed in the middle of the night, so the man was initially unsuccessful in his asking.
But Jesus said, “because of his shameless persistence and insistence”
his request was granted.
Jesus was demonstrating the fervor with which we should pray to our heavenly Father.
And he was showing us we should never give up in praying for what we need.
He said to be shamelessly persistent.
What does this mean?
First, I have to look at what shame feels like.
When I feel shame, I am generally sad, withdrawn, reserved, and guilt ridden.
I feel unworthy to receive anything and even worse, because I feel unworthy to even desire anything.
Therefore, I cannot imagine being in a place to receive God’s blessings if I attempt to pray underneath the burden of shame.
The opposite of shame then would be to be bold, audacious and have a sense of unreserved expectancy.
So, to be shamelessly persistent in prayer means to be boldly persistent in prayer.
For when we pray this way, Jesus tells us our prayers are answered.
He said, “For everyone who asks and keeps on asking receives; and he who seeks and keeps on seeking finds; and to him who knocks and keeps on knocking, the door shall be opened.”
Today I choose to pray as Jesus taught being shamelessly persistent as I wait for God to answer my prayers.
May you find as you continue to pray for your needs the Lord will answer your prayers.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for showing me how to pray. Thank You for sending Your Son to teach me how to come to You in prayer with boldness and be persistent. Thank You for listening to my prayers, Lord. Thank You for making it possible for me to come and sit in Your presence as I make my requests known to You. Increase my faith. Cast out any unbelief in my heart. Help me know You are working in every circumstance of my life. Replace my anxiety with peace and sweet assurance. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I AM working in every circumstance of your life and answering all your prayers.
Response: Thank You, most merciful and gracious God.
