Matthew 9:13
“Go and learn what this means; I desire mercy [that is, readiness to help those in trouble] and not sacrifice and sacrificial victims. For I came not to call and invite [to repentance] the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with God), but sinners (the erring ones and all those not free from sin).”
Jesus was talking to the Pharisees in this passage.
They questioned why He was eating with and in relationship with sinners.
His response is filled with Wisdom.
First, He told them to learn about mercy.
And then He told them He desired mercy.
So, what is mercy?
The Amplified Bible further defines mercy as a “readiness to help those in trouble.”
We get a glimpse of what Jesus meant when He talked about mercy.
A glimpse into God’s heart.
A great teaching moment.
God is so merciful.
Jesus showed just how merciful He was when He healed every sick person who came to Him.
He was merciful when He chose His disciples.
He was merciful when He ate with sinners.
He was merciful when He washed the disciples’ feet.
He was merciful when He delivered people from the enemy’s hold.
He was merciful when He fed the thousands.
He was merciful when He brought the dead back to life.
He was merciful when He died on the cross.
He was nothing but merciful as He served in His ministry.
When I wonder how I can be more like Jesus, I need only look at how He lived and how He served.
Today I pray the Lord will put His compassion in my heart and help me be more merciful to others.
May you find the Lord is merciful to you, so you can be merciful to others as well.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for showing me just how merciful You are. Thank You for being such a loving God. Thank You for sending Your Son to this earth to show us Your heart. As He gave of Himself so completely, He gave us You. He showed us how to live, serve, and treat others. He showed us how to care for others. Father, I pray for more compassion. I pray You infuse my spirit with Your love. Help me love as You do. Help me offer mercy instead of judgment. Help me serve before demanding service. Help me do all You have for me to do. Help me be obedient to You in every way. Strengthen me to do as You ask, Lord. Grant me courage where I am afraid. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I AM with you My child and lead you into all that I have planned for you.
Response: Help me follow You, Lord.
