Press on Toward the Goal

Philippians 3:13-14
I do not consider, brethren, that I have captured and made it my own [yet] but one thing I do [ it is my one aspiration]; forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
I press on toward the goal to win the [supreme and heavenly] prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward.
Paul was such an encourager.
He wrote about his imperfect nature, and although he earnestly sought to come up higher and higher in his walk with Christ, he was still imperfect.
He encouraged the congregation to press on as he was pressing on.
Keep moving forward.
Forget the past.
Forget what had happened to them or what they had done.
It takes courage to move past our mistakes.
It takes courage to move past the difficulties we’ve faced.
And it takes courage to move past the harm done to us.
His words “straining forward to what lies ahead” are indicative of how difficult it is to move forward instead of looking backwards.
Straining is difficult.
When we strain a muscle or a tendon, it hurts.
It takes time to heal.
But over time we do heal.
Paul says we have to strain to go forward.
He told them to “press on toward the goal to win the prize which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward.”
Whatever this temporary life can offer, it falls short of the long-term goal and prize of eternal life.
Eternity with God, the Lord of Lord’s, and King of Kings.
This is something worth straining and striving for.
Today I choose to let go of the past and lean into God’s promise of eternal life with Him.
May you find that forgetting what is behind you opens up what lies ahead of you.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, thank You for the promise of eternal life. Thank You for the prize that is worth fighting for. Help us let go of all we need to let go of so we can lean into Your promises, Lord. Help us strive to move forward and forget what lies behind. Help us lead a life which seeks You above all else. Keep our eyes on You no matter what has happened to us or what is happening right now. Keep our eyes fixed on Your perfection, Your love, and Your grace. Keep our hearts aligned with Yours, Father. Please keep us Yours through every trial and tribulation. Keep us Yours through every blessing. Thank You, Father, for the promise of forever with You. Help us bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing our prayer.
Answer: I AM the Great I AM, and you need only to keep your eyes on Me.
Response: Help us look to You for all we need and push forward toward eternal life with You, Lord. Amen
