John
4:49-50
“The king’s officer pleaded with Him, Sir, do come down at once before my little child is dead!”
“Jesus answered him, Go in peace; your son will live! And the man put his trust in what Jesus said and started home."
Jesus was just starting His ministry here in this passage.
His first miracle was turning the water into wine.
His second miracle was healing this officer’s child.
The officer’s faith in this passage really spoke to me.
Initially, he begged Jesus to come with him.
Twice, he asked Jesus to go to his home.
Jesus simply said, “Go in peace; your son will live!”
I wondered if I’d have had the courage and faith to just walk away.
It’s not like Jesus had healed anyone else yet, so there wasn’t proof that He could.
And even if there would have been, I don’t know if my faith would have been strong enough to believe Jesus didn’t have to put His hands on my child to heal him.
After all, we take our children to the doctor when they are sick.
The doctor listens to their heart, looks in their ears and throat, and touches the places that hurt.
And by looking, touching, and evaluating the situation, the doctor makes a diagnosis and recommends treatment.
Jesus didn’t technically know the ailment causing the boy to be so sick according to human eyes.
Would I have believed He could heal my child without seeing him?
The king’s soldier did.
He walked away in faith.
He walked away from the One Who could heal his son and went home.
On his way, he met up with his servants who told him his son was well.
He was told the healing occurred at the very moment Jesus said the boy was healed.
So, the whole household believed.
This is such a beautiful story about God’s power, mercy, and wisdom.
The power of healing.
His mercy in doing so.
And His wisdom in sending the man home in peace.
Today I pray for more faith – the kind of faith that makes me know the Lord is working even when things look messy.
May you find the Lord is willing and able to work miracles in your life which exceed your faith in order to grow your faith.
Daily Prayer:
O Lord, my God, thank You for reminding me You are a God of mercy, power, healing, and love. Increase my faith, Lord. As I walk through difficult and challenging days, please strengthen me. Help me hang onto You. And when I am unable, please hang onto me. Thank You for breathing life into my spirit as I read Your Word. Thank You for allowing me to sit in Your presence and be lifted up today. Keep me seeking You amidst the chaos of this world. Help me bless someone this day. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
Answer: I AM with you My child and I AM holding you up through the storms of your life.
Response: Thank You, Lord. Strengthen me and help me serve You well while I am here, Father.
